Bernice Gilman Berk, Charter _Life Member, and Past President of the Winthrop Art Association, lived in Winthrop for many years before retiring to Lauderhill, Florida with her husband.  There she still works daily, in her studio, but is always connected to what is happening with the art in Winthrop.

Bernice has always loved to work primarily in Watercolor and she developed an individual style, using a Batik method (wax resist) on Rice and Mulberry Papers.  Her interests expanded and she became an expert in Papermaking, using natural fibers and dyes, that were unique, and expressed individuality in her landscapes, seascapes and dimensional paper quilts.

Another aspects of her art interests has been her Needle-art, Needlepoint, Brazilian Embroidery, and original Quilting.  For many years she volunteered her time, and taught an art workshop for senior citizens in Winthrop, encouraging the ladies to do original art work.  Two quilts she designed were recognized for prized's in 1976 at the Massachusetts Bi-Centennial Quilt show.

Bernice continues to show her art in the Fort Lauderdale area, where she is a member of the Hollywood Cultural Center and Coral Springs Artist Guild.  Her work is sometimes sent to show at the annual Winthrop Art Festival, where she exhibited for many years.  Past exhibitions include: Rockport, Saugus, Marblehead and Somerville, Massachusetts, and her art has been included in many private collections in this area.

One of her fondest beliefs about woman artist is: from the beginning of time, creative women, everywhere in the world leave a precious gift.....their beautiful handwork.
